Day 2 and 3 Highlights – Limpopo Closed Chess Championship 2025 – Matsobane, Bra Willy and Boitumelo
Day 2 of the Limpopo Closed Chess Championship 2025 was full of excitement and great battles on the board. One of the most enjoyable sections to watch was the Over-50 division. These players showed that experience is a powerful weapon. Many of them were stars in their prime years, and they proved they still have the skill and fighting spirit. In the end, Mr. Makgoba Willy stood out and finished as the champion of the section with an impressive 5.5/7.

In the Women’s section, Boitumelo Maepa from the University of Limpopo shone throughout the tournament. She played with confidence, focus, and strong preparation. Her performance earned her the Ladies title, making the University of Limpopo proud once again.

The Open section was the most competitive. Players fought hard for every point, and the results were close from start to finish. But in the end, the defending champion Matsobane showed why he is one of the best in Limpopo. He kept his cool, stayed consistent, and finished with a brilliant 9.5/10. This victory makes him the first player in ten years to win the title twice, a historic achievement.

Days 2 and 3 were a reminder of how rich Limpopo is with chess talent—young, old, men, and women all bringing their best to the board. The energy in the auditorium was high, and everyone was excited to see what the final rounds would bring.
